About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Academic, Social & Emotional Needs Counsellor to join our school community. This position focuses on supporting secondary school students (Years 7-13) with their academic progress, social development, and emotional wellbeing. The counsellor will work collaboratively with teaching staff, parents/carers, and external specialists to ensure comprehensive support for adolescent students.
Working Conditions

Requirements
Qualifications and Experience
Master's degree in School Counselling, Psychology, or related field
Professional accreditation with BACP, UKCP or equivalent UK body is preferred
Minimum 3 years experience counselling secondary/adolescent students
Experience working in a UK or international secondary school setting preferred
Strong knowledge of adolescent development and age-appropriate interventions
Training in crisis intervention and safeguarding procedures
Understanding of UCAS application process and careers guidance
Enhanced DBS clearance required

Excellence in interpersonal and communication skills with teenagers
Cultural sensitivity and experience working with diverse populations
Ability to establish rapport and trust with adolescent students
Strong organisational and time management skills
Proficiency with technology and counselling management software
Excellent written and spoken English; additional languages beneficial
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and professional boundaries
Collaborative approach to student support
Flexibility and adaptability in response to emerging student needs
Knowledge of UK education system and national curriculum
Responsibilities
Academic Support
Identify and assess students requiring academic interventions
Develop and implement targeted academic support plans for secondary students
Collaborate with subject teachers to ensure appropriate accommodations and differentiation
Monitor student academic progress and adjust support strategies as needed
Provide guidance for GCSE and A-Level subject selection, academic planning, and university preparation
Support students through examination periods with stress management techniques
Social Development
Facilitate social skills development programmes for adolescents
Implement peer support and mentoring initiatives
Address issues of social integration, peer relationships, and group dynamics
Coordinate conflict resolution processes when needed
Develop programmes to support positive school culture and prevent bullying
Support students in developing digital citizenship and online responsibility
Emotional Wellbeing
Provide individual and group counselling for students facing emotional challenges
Implement evidence-based interventions for anxiety, depression, and stress management
Develop and deliver preventative mental health programmes
Create crisis response protocols and support students during difficult situations
Coordinate referrals to external mental health professionals when needed
Support students through transitions (school entry, key stage progression, sixth form)
Collaboration & Communication
Maintain regular communication with parents/carers regarding student progress and wellbeing
Collaborate with teaching staff to develop holistic support strategies
Liaise with external professionals including educational psychologists and therapists
Participate in student support team meetings and case conferences
Provide consultation to teaching staff regarding adolescent development and behaviour management
Organise parent/carer workshops on topics relevant to teenage development and wellbeing
Administrative Duties
Maintain detailed, confidential records of student interactions and interventions
Develop and review counselling policies and procedures for secondary students.
Generate regular reports on counselling services and student outcomes.
Manage the counselling department budget for secondary interventions.
Stay current with research and best practices in adolescent counselling.
Develop and implement data collection systems to track effectiveness of interventions.
Ensure compliance with UK safeguarding regulations and GDPR requirements.
